Letters, 1848-1883.

The collection comprises 6 letters, of which 5 were sent by Alexandre Villain to his friend, the painter and secretary of the Ecole des beaux-arts, Léon Vinit. A letter from Naples, 1848 July 15, is related to the popular insurrection of Paris (Journées de Juin). Villain regrets not having been there to fight as a "soldat citoyen ami de l'ordre" along with the garde nationale, whom he praises with patriotic pride. He discusses the political decisions necessary for establishing a "république modérée." On 1858 Aug. 9, Villain congratulates his friend on the long-awaited award of the Légion d'honneur. Two letters from August 1861 attempt to persuade Vinit to join Villain and their old friends at the manor Dity in the Limousin. One of them is accompanied by a similar letter from Villain's host. A condolence letter was sent to an unnamed friend on the death of his nephew (1883 July 2).
